In 2022, a major security breach struck one of Argentina’s largest electricity distributors, a company that serves over 3 million customers and supplies 20% of the nation’s power. As a key player in the country’s energy infrastructure, their operations are critical not only to its customers but to the nation’s entire power grid. The breach, caused by a misconfigured cloud environment left by a former vendor, led to the complete deletion of resources across all 28 of the company’s AWS accounts. This disruption brought down vital systems, crippling the company’s operations and finances, while also posing a significant threat to national energy stability. With the company operating in a tightly regulated sector, the breach had far-reaching consequences, both internally for the company and externally for the wider energy market it supports. 

The Challenge

During the crisis, Netrix Global was brought in to swiftly address the situation, playing a pivotal role in restoring operations within just three days. The Solution

As an AWS Managed Service Provider (MSP) partner, Netrix Global delivered a comprehensive solution that combines expert consulting, architecture, and implementation services with ongoing operations, monitoring, and continuous optimization. 

Netrix designed and implemented a secure, multi-account architecture using AWS native services to support compliance, visibility, and control at scale. This included: 

  • Security Hub: to assess posture and manage SOC 2-aligned compliance controls 
  • GuardDuty: for threat detection and edge observability 
  • AWS Inspector and Detective: to identify vulnerabilities and investigate incidents 
  • Firewall Manager and AWS WAF: to enforce consistent rules and mitigate threats 
  • IAM policy overhaul: approximately 150 policies updated to enforce least privilege and remove unnecessary access 

Netrix continues to operate and optimize the client’s AWS environment through an observability approach and custom dashboards, to ensure monitoring and incident response, cost optimization strategies, periodic security reviews and policy refinements, automated remediation of common issues and misconfigurations, and more.
