Koibanx is the leading tokenization and Blockchain payments platform in Latin America, with a track record of more than seven years, and “real-world” gateways that bridge the traditional financial system with the Web3 ecosystem. Tokenization and on/off ramps are made available within the regulatory framework for each country in the region.
As Koibanx grew, both acquiring more clients and offering more products, it became increasingly difficult to remain organized, neat, and methodical. The team was overloaded and struggling to maintain everything. Additionally, the team lacked sufficient AWS expertise internally.
Koibanx was struggling as their rapid growth caused operational complexity and a need for consolidation of their cloud environment, which consisted of nearly thousands of services running on hundreds of AWS instances. The company hosted numerous separate accounts for each of their customers, which included banks, as well as different environments such as development and production. Although the environment functioned, it required efficiency improvements, as manual interventions were needed for every deployment and modification.
Koibanx needed to centralize organization of AWS resources to improve governance and management of policies and costs. Specifically, the company needed to automate much of the work required to manage the infrastructure, reducing the need for a large team.
In addition to familiarity with Netrix Global from past successful projects, Koibanx chose Netrix due to their AWS expertise, customer service, and responsiveness. “What we loved about the Netrix proposal is that Netrix planned to build an automated solution made with code. Robotize Control Tower turned out to be a great differentiator from what other companies offered because it allowed us to do the job faster and without such heavy, manual processes. Since we were looking to maximize our efficiency and reduce our margin of error, we thought it was a great idea to work with a solution integrally made with code,” said Andrés Nicolás, Head of Security, Technology, & Infrastructure, Koibanx.
Netrix provided an array of services to automate policies governing the usage of AWS accounts, which led to improvements in operation and security, as well as cost savings.
“The great advantage of having a partner like Netrix was that they already had experience, which quickly helped us identify needs and deploy the solution according to best practices they recommended and that we felt were the most suitable to our needs,” said Mr. Nicolás.
The Netrix team conducted a Well-Architected Assessment of the current Koibanx cloud setup to benchmark against best practices and build a roadmap to optimize costs and remediate inefficiencies.
Netrix also implemented Robotize Control Tower, a Netrix packaged product that allows creation and management of AWS accounts using infrastructure-as-code. Robotize provides simple automation and standardization, reducing time required to manage accounts and create resources in AWS. Automated workflows such as automated AWS account creation and governance enabled Koibanx to achieve increased efficiency and fewer errors.
“What Robotize Control Tower helped us achieve is implementing clear and concrete boundaries within the cloud platform so that users can only manage accounts securely according to policy.” said Mr. Nicolás.
With Robotize Control Tower as a different deployment model, account creation and modification are automated. Additional improvements made to Koibanx infrastructure included implementation of single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, and enforcement of consistent policies. Enforcement of security policies is also easier.
Using Terraform, Netrix created a tool and modified code for Robotize Control Tower. The new configuration also included approximately 40 Elastic Load Balancers.
Robotize guides team members to keep mitigation and engineering projects progressing neatly and timely, relieving operational burdens. With Robotize Control Tower, Koibanx has achieved a substantial reduction in daily workload. Everything can be handled with two people working in tandem.
“We achieved a great benefit after the implementation of Robotize. We have considerably shortened the time it takes to manage all of our accounts and the creation of resources in AWS,” said Javier Arias, Site Reliability Engineer, Koibanx.
The project was completed within three months, as planned. Koibanx reduced AWS costs as much as 30%. Automations with Robotize Control Tower resulted in Koibanx no longer paying for processes to continuing running unnecessarily.
“A highlight of working with Netrix was definitely the correct management of the project to meet deadlines and goals, smoothly according to what was initially planned,” said Mr. Arias.
Netrix held several knowledge transfer sessions and provided the Koibanx team with the documentation needed to make modifications on their own moving forward.
“What stood out the most was the communication, which was always clear, concrete, and concise, and allowed us to navigate the inherent problems of a transformation project with ease — and even with a bit of fun,” concluded Mr. Nicolás.
