What Changed with Microsoft 365 E5

Microsoft just made one of the biggest changes yet to how organizations can experience AI-powered security.

Security Copilot, the generative AI assistant built into Microsoft’s security stack, is now included with Microsoft 365 E5 licensing.

This update means every E5 customer automatically gains access to Security Copilot with a monthly allocation of Security Compute Units (SCUs) that scales with user count.

Previously, adoption was limited by unpredictable pricing—organizations had to buy expensive compute units upfront. Now, all E5 customers can experiment with AI-assisted detection, investigation, and response at no additional cost.

Here’s what Microsoft announced:

  • Security Copilot is now included with Microsoft 365 E5
Starting November 2025, all E5 customers will automatically receive Security Copilot access at no extra charge. Microsoft will provide 30 days’ advance notice before activation.
  • You get a monthly pool of Security Compute Units (SCUs)
Each tenant receives 400 SCUs for every 1,000 E5 users, scaling proportionally. Larger tenants can receive up to 10,000 SCUs per month as part of their subscription.
  • It’s built directly into your existing tools
Security Copilot works inside Microsoft Defender, Entra, Intune, and Purview, along with the standalone Copilot portal. Analysts and admins can use AI right where they already work.
  • You can build your own agents and automations
E5 customers also gain access to Agent Builder and APIs to develop custom Security Copilot agents and integrate workflows across the Microsoft ecosystem.

In short, what was once a premium add-on is now a built-in capability.

Why This Matters for Security and IT Leaders

This inclusion is more than a licensing update—it’s a strategic shift that makes AI-driven security practical for enterprises of every size.

1. Predictable cost, clearer value

Security Copilot is now part of your existing E5 investment. The monthly SCU pool provides cost predictability and simplifies budgeting, removing the uncertainty of pay-per-use pricing.

2. Easier experimentation

You can now run proof-of-concepts without procurement delays. Test real scenarios like alert triage or insider-risk investigation using the capacity you already own.

3. Seamless integration

Because Security Copilot lives inside Defender, Entra, Intune, and Purview, your analysts can stay in familiar tools while AI enhances their productivity.

4. Stronger ROI on E5

Microsoft 365 E5 has always focused on security, compliance, and analytics. Adding Security Copilot extends that value—connecting AI directly to those investments.

How to Get Started: A 90-Day Plan

With the licensing barrier gone, the next step is execution. Here’s a focused 90-day approach for E5 organizations.

Month 1: Prepare Your Environment

  • Confirm when your tenant will activate Security Copilot.
  • Validate configuration across Defender, Entra, Intune, and Purview.
  • Review Microsoft’s data-handling documentation with your compliance and legal teams.

Goal: Ensure your environment is secure, integrated, and ready for AI-driven insights.

Month 2: Identify High-Impact Use Cases

Select two or three clear, measurable scenarios:

  • Phishing triage and alert summarization
  • SOC incident investigation automation
  • Conditional Access review and identity risk analysis
  • Data-loss policy tuning in Purview
  • Endpoint policy impact assessment in Intune

Define success metrics such as reduction in response time or manual investigation effort.

Month 3: Standardize and Measure

  • Develop promptbooks for repeatable workflows.
  • Establish access controls and usage logging.
  • Monitor SCU consumption through Security Copilot dashboards.

By day 90, you should know which use cases deliver the most value and how to scale them across your security operations.

How Netrix Global Can Help

At Netrix Global, we see this announcement as a major turning point for E5 customers looking to modernize their security programs with AI.

We help enterprises move from entitlement to impact through three structured services:

1. Readiness and Design Workshop

We assess your Defender, Entra, Intune, Purview, and Sentinel environments to ensure Security Copilot can access high-quality signals. We then map where Copilot can add immediate value.

Our experts work with your analysts to build promptbooks and playbooks that align AI automation with your organization’s processes and risk profile.

3. Enablement and Ongoing Optimization

We train teams to use Copilot responsibly, measure results, and continuously optimize as Microsoft adds new agents and capabilities.

The goal is simple: help your security operations gain speed and confidence without adding risk.

The inclusion of Security Copilot with Microsoft 365 E5 marks a new era for enterprise security.

AI-assisted defense is now a standard part of the Microsoft security experience—ready for any E5 customer to activate and use.
