Choosing the Right CMS: A Guide for Businesses

Every business, whether it is a mom-and-pop shop, or a fortunate 500 company, needs an online presence. It may take the form of a website, an intranet or perhaps a mobile application. Whatever your online presence is, you will need a way to update the content.

This is where a Content Management System or CMS will be your best friend. In the simplest of terms, a CMS is an application that allows you to build, update and manage data without having to dig into the code and manually edit the content.

A Multitude of Options

Having options is great… except when having to many makes it difficult to choose the right one and trust us there are plenty of CMS to choose from. Don’t worry , we are here to refine those choices and help you choose the best one for your business.

First let’s get a lay of the land and see the general types of CMS that are out there.

  • Drag & Drop: Ideal for non-technical users. Content updates are simple, like dragging and dropping images, selecting themes, and writing The downside to this is you pretty much get what you see. It often lacks custom functionality.
  • Open Source: Powerful and customizable but requires technical expertise to set up. Can be either a pro or con depending on the development team’s skills.
  • Proprietary: Proprietary CMS are powerful tools if you don’t need much customization. One major downside to this is the licensing cost which for some can run in the thousands per year.

What type of company are you?

As you can see each category of CMS has its pros and cons. Depending on the type of business you are in, some of the cons in one category might be a pro in another. So before going any fur ther lets figure out what type of business you are in.

Below are three basic categories of business requirements you may fall under. We are focusing on your business needs as opposed to the type of business you conduct.

  • Business A: Needs a simple web presence to showcase products and services, with basic forms and calls to action. No custom business logic or third-party integration required.
  • Business B: Requires a customizable website with third-party plugin integration, an authenti cated intranet for employees, and some custom business logic.
  • Business C: Focuses on internal operations with little need for a public-facing site. Requires a web application with extensive custom business logic, possibly

For Business A, a drag-and-drop CMS like Webflow, Squarespace, or Wix might suffice, but they offer limited custom logic integration.

If you gravitate more towards being Business C, then stop right there. What it sounds like you are looking for is a Custom Web application and not a CMS.
